Understanding the Magento 2 Data Migration Tool

The Magento 2 data migration tool was created to help efficiently move all of a site's products, customers, order data, store configurations, promotions, and more. Whew, that was an extensive list. So bottom line, it is an important tool. Many find it difficult to use the data migration tool correctly.

The M2 data migration tool is transferring the M1  database over to the M2 database based on a set of rules defined in XML files. The tool does just what it says, transfers data. Don’t expect themes and customizations to be automatically changed or migrated over to Magento 2.

The Magento 2 Data Migration Tool Supports:

  1. Settings: All website settings, websites, and stores going to M2 are supported. Most of the Magento data is related to the website and store, so this is important to go first.
  2. Data: This is the tool that will transfer your categories, products, customers, orders, wishlists, reviews, and just about everything else you can think of into Magento 2.
  3. Delta: This allows you to append new M1 entries to M2 databases with delta migration.
